10. Play. Go for a ride on a swing. Twirl around till you’re dizzy and fall to the ground. Hang out with your children, niece/nephew or your grandchildren. There is something about play that brings out the free in you and me! At the core, child-like delight taps into the truth of who you are.
2. Celebrate yourself. It feels good to acknowledge and celebrate your wins. Unmanaged, chronic stress coming from a negative perspective creates physical,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mental and emotional wear and tear. It’s hard to imagine because we relate something physical to a physical problem. For example, you stub your toe, it hurts. So how can a feeling or emotion (which is driven by our perspective) cause illness, even disease?
We’ve all heard that our perspective, which is our outlook, slant, or point of view is important when it comes to our happiness and success. It’s our perspective that acts as the lens to our view of the world around us as well as how we act and how we react to all that we see. All we need to do is look around and see how those with a positive perspective,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who embrace life with passion and a desire to create and contribute-thrive. We also see that those with a negative perspective, who numbly get through their days often do little more than survive. Well, not only does our perspective create the life we live,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s also one of the greatest contributors to a life filled with health and wellness or…illness and disease.
Two people can be in the exact same position and it’s their perspective that can create or compromise their health. For example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], picture two people sitting in traffic. It’s the same situation for both but the way they each choose to view the situation can be entirely different. One person can be using the time to unwind, listen to music, listen to an audio book or learn something new through a recording or CD. Another person, in the same situation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], becomes angry and frustrated, choosing to use that time to bang on the steering wheel and drown in a sea of stress induced hormones. While it’s the same situation for both, it’s the one who’s choosing a more positive perspective and reaction to the event that will enjoy greater health and wellness. Why?
Think about how your body reacts to feelings and emotions. You may become angry and your face reddens, you’re nervous and you get “butterflies”, you’re embarrassed and you blush, you’re upset and you may get a “sour stomach.” These are all physical responses to a feeling or emotion. They’re also single instances and we can immediately see a physical reaction take place. If the body reacts this way to a single incident, what happens when you’re under constant pressure, continually angry, frustrated, discouraged and upset? What happens when you add to this the stress and strain from trying to be a good partner, co-worker, employer/employee, parent, child, sibling, neighbor or friend? What happens when you continuously replay negatively charged events from long ago, hang onto past grudges and hurts, feel hopeless, helpless, pessimistic or frustrated with your business, your relationships…your life?
We have either positive or negative emotions and every emotion bathes the body in hormones and chemicals. Positive emotions such as feelings of love, joy and happiness, flood the body with “feel good” hormones and endorphins which nurture, heal and support the body (these are the same chemicals that are secreted during a “runner’s high.”) On the other hand, every negative emotion floods the body with stress hormones. These are the hormones that are ignited by the stress response,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is crucial to your survival but damaging when continuously released. This stress response, which we know as the “flight or fight” response, is what enables you to react quickly in order to get out of harms way. For example, if a car is coming towards you, it’s this magnificently designed response that enables you to quickly jump the curb to safety. It’s designed to keep you safe and works perfectly over the short term. When under chronic stress coming from a negative perspective however, this same system is ignited…and not turned off. This same system that’s designed to protect you over the short term is causing enormous wear and tear over the long term leading to symptoms, illnesses, conditions and disease.
Stress causes aging, weight gain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], illness and disease. It suppresses your immune system, making you more vulnerable to bacterial and viral invasion. Stress delays wound healing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], affects every organ, system and every cell you have. Have you ever seen someone and thought, “Wow, they look like they’ve had a hard life” or noticed that they really haven’t aged well? The way they’ve handled their stress is written all over them.
If we view situations and circumstances from a pessimistic and negative perspective our glass will always be half empty. If we choose to go the more positive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], optimistic route, we’ll see that same glass as half full. The real beauty of this is that if we discover we lean towards a negative perspective, we’ve been thinking negatively or only seeing a half full glass, this is something we can change…if we choose.
Our perspective is formed by our belief system, our environments, our relationships, our values, our upbringing and so much more. These variables come together and form a positive or negative perspective. It’s sort of like when we bake a cake. Put in a variety of different fresh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], delicious ingredients that work well together and you’ll have a fabulous and positive outcome. Put in rotten eggs, stale flour and sour milk and it should be no surprise that you’ll get…exactly what you put in.
Our bodies are billboards telling the world how we’re handling our stress. When we’re healthy internally (through a positive outlook and perspective) it will show itself externally through an energetic, vibrant, healthy and youthful body. When we’re unhealthy internally, it will show externally and our bodies will rat us out like a six year old telling on their sibling. Just look at someone’s face. Either laugh or frown lines will permanently etch themselves on someone’s face according to the facial expression they used most. Laugh lines or deeply burrowed frown lines-what do you see when you look in the mirror?
Nothing has meaning until the meaning we give it. What this means is that besides the two intrinsic fears we have of falling and loud noises, nothing is scary, threatening, upsetting or aggravating unless we decide it is. On the other hand, nothing is great, wonderful or terrific unless we decide it is either. What’s at the core of how we view things and the meaning we give to things? You guessed it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our perspective.

These are things you think about, read about, talk about and do something about. These interests may give you insights into your areas of expertise. This helps you build your overall confidence and self-image,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and may inform you about how that expertise might be useful in other situations.

In order to value something you must take inventory. What are your experiences? What skills have you developed? What knowledge have you gained? You might want to do this as it relates to a specific area of your life - like in your role as a leader or at work in general (as two quick examples). Make this a project for an afternoon. Find a quiet space and think, write and inventory. Putting these things on paper is a big step towards both recognizing and valuing your expertise.
You`ve received lots of feedback in your life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and not all of it is corrective in nature. Unfortunately, many people ignore, downplay or forget when they`re told they are skilled or good at something. Listen carefully and take heed of what people tell you you are good at. They are very likely right.
Share humbly. Yes, you need to have confidence in your advice. And, to be most effective, you must remember that your advice should be about helping others, not letting them see how much you know. This is a fine balance, one that you will spend your lifetime working on. Know that some people may misconstrue your intentions. However, if your intention is purely focused on the other person from the start,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your advice will be better received and more valued by the other person too.
When someone says you are good at something, do you say (or think) "thank you" or do you immediately downplay their comments? If you do the latter it is likely associated with a "yes, but I`m not that good" or "I`m not as good as Carl . . ." Expertise is relative. For instance, it`s likely I know more about antique John Deere tractors than most everyone who will read this. Yet even though I own several and have been around them my whole life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in different circles I would be a neophyte. Regardless of the topic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are people who may be more expert than you - that does not mean you don`t have valuable expertise.
Consider your interests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
There are five ways to understand and begin to better value your expertise. There is one more important point that takes us back to the start of this article.
If this title has you scratching your head,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wondering if I am suggesting you become an egomaniac,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], relax! That is the furthest thing from my mind (though I`ll talk about it before I`m through).
Why is this idea important enough for me to write about? In order to be an effective coach, mentor or trusted advisor, you must at the very least trust your own advice!
Remember the times when someone thanked you for your advice, counsel or feedback. Remembering successes is an important part of this process! If you have trouble remembering them, make a list, put them in a journal or find some other way to recognize and remember that your advice was helpful to others. If your advice has been true in the past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will be true again!
So how can you gain a healthy perspective on your expertise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Here are five ways to help you get started:
The truth is, while there are people with super-high self images related to their expertise and knowledge, many more people don`t have a healthy, valid confidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], understanding or awareness of their own skills, knowledge, expertise and brilliance.
Let me put it another way. You must recognize, value and trust your expertise before feedback and advice can be best given to others. Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], feedback and wise counsel is not about you; it`s about the other person - and - you must know what you know and be confident in your expertise and perspective too.
Realize that expertise is relative.
Listen to the feedback of others.
Remember past feedback successes.
Inventory your experiences, skills and knowledge.
What follows is for everyone, but especially those who are a bit timid or unsure of their expertise.

Remember, in this “hypothetical” situation, you started out determined that it was going to be a good day. Which of the above approaches do you think is more apt to make that a reality?
I can't promise you that the bluebird of happiness will come and nest in your hair, but you may find that your outlook is a little brighter, the gloom a little lighter and your relationships a little smoother. The more you practice this simple technique, the easier it will be to find things to be grateful for.
At the end of the day, read over your list of things that you have found to be grateful for today. If you have fewer than five, think a little harder. Find at least five. Write them down. Read them. Read them aloud. Ponder them. And when you feel a smile on your face, turn off the light and go to bed with your mind fixed on your gratitude.

How are you going to react? You CAN go with the nuclear explosion in your brain, mangle the glasses, strangle the kitten, and throw the computer out the window. But is that really going to make you feel any better in the long run? As you may have guessed by now, this is not one of those charming little abecedaries to teach children the alphabet. This list of alphabetized words is for adults with serious problems. You know what? It will be – or at least it will be better than the day before – and you'll have another opportunity (that's something in itself to be grateful for) to look for things to be grateful for. Think about them as you drift off to sleep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Zen symbol of the yin/yang has an important lesson to teach us. Light and dark are intermingled. When we're down, it is only too easy to see the dark. Expressing gratitude is a way of seeing the light, too, and acknowledging the wholeness of life.
Wait! Don't click that big X in the corner. I know you feel like snarling, “Oh, yeah? What do I have to be grateful for?” On my worse days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm the same way. But read me out.
Today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm going to talk about something that you may not think belongs with the list above. It is, however, something that is very important – perhaps even crucial – for adults with problems. G is for Gratitude.
You've seen it happen in your own life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in your own mind, haven't you? You wake up in the morning determined that today is going to be a good day. Then the earpiece on your glasses falls off (to use a very recent and real-life example). While you are trying to replace the earpiece, the kitten jumps up on your computer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], scatters the tiny little screws to hell and gone, and types mmmm,,,,,,,,,,,??//////.
One further suggestion. If the reason for gratitude that you've written down involves a person, don't keep it to yourself. Tell that person that you are grateful and tell them why.
When you are depressed and down in the dumps or when your life seems to be going down the tubes (Notice the "down" word? That's what I mean by a downward spiral),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is hard to look up and see the sky but it is also absolutely crucial. You don't have to be a Pollyanna. You just have to look for a few things you can be truly grateful for.
It could be as simple as being grateful that you did wake up this morning. It could mean acknowledging that there are people who care about you and are willing to help you. It could mean allowing yourself to feel (and be grateful for) a glimmer of hope in a dark and dismal landscape.
The reasons for gratitude are myriad and varied. The few examples I've given above may not resonate with you. Find your own. Make a point of looking for them. When you find one, make note of it. Actually write it down: I am grateful for_____________. You might even want to carry a small notebook or a notecard with you expressly for that purpose.
Chances are you'll sleep better and when you awaken in the morning, you may find it easier to convince yourself that today is going to be a good day.

There is a popular theory called the Law of Attraction which states that the universe is attuned to our thought patterns and will deliver to us whatever it is that our thoughts dwell on. Now, whether you believe in LOA or not,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I think that if you are honest with yourself you will admit that negative thoughts are a downward spiral.
An alternative approach to the situation would be to be grateful that you have a son available who can actually see to recover the tiny screws and put them in the earpiece. You can be grateful that you have a cute kitten who, while he is a trial, also makes you laugh and lightens the atmosphere of gloom around you. Why? Because this creates a reference point other than stressed, overwhelmed, anxious.
Now it’s a matter of making it happen (more appropriately allowing it to happen) given the nature of our work, today’s fast-paced 24/7 workplace where we feel the need to read emails on which we’re copied; make endless to-do lists, feel the expectation of instant response, being always “in the middle” of something.
When your mind is focused on details and problems you are making sure (whether you know it or not) that you have more problems to solve and details to worry about. Worried about long hours on the job, you get a project that requires more long hours. When you’re feeling guilty because you’re working and not at the pub with your significant other and your friends, you will be in the situation again and again. And where’s the fun in that?!
Our role as a leader is not to get people to do things. Being a leader is about how we behave that encourages others to want to take responsibility for what they do and who they are.
I learned to be a good leader on the job. Like many others promoted to management, I was a technically good at what I did before I took the leadership position of a client service team. Being motivated by results and getting things done myself, it wasn’t easy to move into being accountable for the work others did. As much as I wanted to be a good manager, it was easy to get overwhelmed at the beginning.
Wouldn’t it be nice to attract what you do want? To be more deliberate in what you attract more of?
So, the story I was telling myself was essentially put off being happy until the work was done,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], projects finished, team members motivated, clients satisfied. I ask you, is the work every done? The more I worked, the less I played and more I noticed symptoms of the imbalance.
 Work is serious, important stuff, not to be taken lightly.
 Work is where you get recognition and are acknowledged for all you get done.
 You relax after the work is done.

Maybe it wasn’t an either or thing? Work or Life? Maybe the way to Life Balance wasn’t about work and life but consciously working in a life? Is that what my boss meant when he told me, “Denise, get a life!” ?
2) Make Positive Aspects notes of what’s going right, in the moment. And start to feel a little better, keep writing, a little better still, into feel good.
Now, we when you get back to your desk, the order of what you do is now important.

1st Secret: Prioritize, Consciously
Define 3 priorities each day.
So back to that question, “What do I do when I get back to my desk?” Oh and those Secrets in the title of this article? I didn’t forget. Here they come….
I’d like to share with you what has helped me see that it’s possible to be doing while happily being in a fast paced, service-oriented leadership role. Let’s start by exploring the concepts of work, success, happiness, and yes even stress. And then see how to put these into perspective on a daily basis.
SUCCESS
You may have only been aware of the former kind of attraction. The Laws of Attraction are always working.

I’ve taken to define my Happiness: Greg Hicks and Rick Foster Definition in their book “How we choose to be Happy”
Alternatively, when you shift focus into outcomes you really do want (and I’m assuming longer hours and less time at the pub are not what you do want), and attach strong emotions to those wants, you deliberately create more of the same.
Let’s keep in mind,
Compared with a goal you only have complete control of your priorities. You gain a sense of control when you choose to make something important, or not important, and you’re directing energy by making more decisions.
3rd Secret, Accept what is first, then act
The stress comes when you don’t want what you have now. Control less, allow more. Lower the volume on the inner dialogue so when you ask yourself “What’s my next immediate action,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” you’ll hear your own wisdom.
Clearly defining the outcome and spending time thinking about positive aspects of achieving it, engaging your senses and having lots of detail and getting into the feeling place of achieving it offers a nice picture to live into, doesn’t it? You’re in Possibility Space. Kick starting attracting what you do want!
ACCEPTANCE for WHAT IS, first. Then Action.
By doing this, you essentially release tension and open space to allow your intuition to guide you to your next immediate action, you are better able to follow your intention for how you want to be.
This is where:
By making priorities, you take responsibility for choices you create in the moment. And you’ll decide your best attitude for the situation, by asking yourself “What attitude will enhance the quality of my experience right now?” (Hicks and Foster) I have an irate client on the phone. What attitude will enhance the quality of this experience for me, for him? Is it knee jerk reaction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hi Ho Silver, or maybe curious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], attentive?
I’d like to suggest some Daily Practices. All you need is Pen and Paper. I recommend putting pen to paper, instead of typing so that you create the connection between your mind and body.
Now, this isn’t the same as controlling! It’s choosing to direct your energies towards outlets of what you want. Not based on lists of to-do or reacting to what ever comes in the email or conversations. Consciously prioritizing in the moment what’s important.
Let’s consider an alternative definition for work.
Besides, you’re better able to handle what comes at you when you’re feeling centered and capable, aren’t you?

Essentially, stress comes about when we’re any place in our minds but present. We get stressed when what we have isn’t what we want. As well, when we want to arrive at an outcome more than we want to be doing what we’re doing, we become stressed. It’s as simple as that. We know we’re doing this to ourselves because we can feel it in our bodies. Muscle tension, butterflies.
Being creatures of habit, wound up in stress, overwhelm, the other end of the feeling spectrum, we may need to remind ourselves what it feels like to Feel Good. Give ourselves permission to feel good, even happy!
Here’s a story to illustrate this point:
STRESS
If Happy is too far a stretch for you? Feel good. Feel Good too far? Feel better. Start to feel one step better than where you are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then better still and even better still.
You may have heard the expression, “success is getting what you want.” I like this because it presupposes you know what it is that you want, and more important why you want it. It gets us thinking in terms of outcomes. Outcomes create a sense of towards/forward direction. This also taps into principles in the Law of Attraction. Simply put: Like attracts like.
Whatever else you have that comes in; you can determine the to-do order within framework of your 3 priorities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
HAPPINESS
WORK
In the coaching world, we encourage the use of structures - tool to practice/reminders. You might use structures already if you put a Post-it note on the door to remember to take your lunch. Your Day Planner is that tool for practice. You don’t need to learn a new system, you just use the space already made available in the planner.
There is something else going on. As a manager/team leader when you take Responsibility for prioritizing in this way – how you are BEING in what you are DOING, you model this for your teams.
1) Put yourself in Time Out to switch your focus into Feel Good before you write an email, talk on the phone, or start a project. Schedule in mini breaks, work your life into your work schedule. And whenever you notice you’re not in a warm and fuzzy (inner smile) state. Because you’re not as resourceful to yourself or others as you can be.
I choose to drink coffee in the morning.
I choose to call the client after talking with the team.
I choose to go to that committee meeting for the volunteer organization.
I choose to go to the pub with my Sweetie.
I’m not saying that you can’t keep your arm-long to-do lists. This will help you expand your choices to better manage who you are being in what you’re doing to get through those lists.

Taking a breath suspends time in our minds and brings our awareness into the present. When would now be a good time to take a deep breath?
For the next few minutes we’re going to explore concepts and actions to help you be the best of who you are in what you do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially on your busiest day in service to others. My goal is that by the end of this article you will having taken in at least one new and useful idea that you can put into action immediately AND enjoy this time together.
With the transition, the beliefs and values I held deeply, mostly unaware, and that influenced my performance started to surface. This was a good thing. Awareness is the first step to change, isn’t it?
When you take yourself out of right now and either think about the past or what you’re doing next, how do you feel? Calm. Peaceful. I doubt it. You might feel excited, which has a similar feeling as anxious doesn’t it?
Are you thinking something like, “Denise, this is all well and good but what do I actually do when I get back to my desk?”
In attraction terms, the energy of feeling good has a higher vibration and if you believe like attracts like then you become a magnet for more that makes you feel good.
3) List 5 things you are grateful for in the day. Include the challenges and the success, the people, the weather, the color of the sky, the chips in your lunch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the smell of fresh brewed coffee. Anything for which you can express gratitude.
This is where my concept of “working in a life” comes in. Doing more in your day what feels good to you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I realized that I had a particular belief about work. See if you recognize yourself in any of these statements?
I believe what Albert Schweitzer said, “Every person I have known who has been truly happy has learned how to serve others.”
2nd Secret: Feel Good, Often
Here are 3 ways to do this, anytime, anyplace, using your Day Planner:
“A master of happiness was traveling with a cumbersome bag upon his shoulder when he came across a seeker. The seeker asked him what true happiness really felt like. The master paused a moment, then smiled and took the bag off his shoulder. As it dropped heavily to the ground, he stood tall in the freedom from the burden he’d been carrying. The seeker said, “I think I understand. And what do you do once you’re happy?” The master smiled, hoisted his bag, and carried on down the road.” (Michael Neill, “Feel Happy Now”)
“Consider work in its most universal sense, as meaning anything that you want or need to be different than it currently is.” This removes the distinction between “work” and “personal life.” In this frame, weeding the garden is just as much “work” as writing a business proposal or responding to a client. Plus, the techniques you use then are applicable in all aspects of you life.
It’s empowering to be at choice isn’t it?
When we put work in one hand and life in the other, we set up a dilemma. This or that. Either Or. In this frame, you might be given alternatives and options, but you don’t have choice.
So I started to literally schedule in appointments with my self – personal training, ballroom dancing classes, committee meetings for a volunteer organization, social activities. My job description didn’t change,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the routine of the day from the outside didn’t change – same number of calls, emails, questions, projects, and company politics - but it felt different. Here’s the amazing paradox. During this same period when I was focusing on my personal development, I was faced with unusual staff turnover and a number of other management challenges resulting from broader organizational changes. I had my best performance review, ever! My superiors recognized me for excellent team leadership and composure under pressure. Scheduling in a life was the difference that made all the difference!

When we go negative on someone or something, we are blinded by the negative feelings, we feel bad, sad, miserable and we don’t see any way out. We feel exhausted because we use all of our positive energy to hold the negative energy down, we suppress it.
Right now, get a sense of the words, positive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], happy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], loving, abundant. Good words aren’t they? Those words give us a good feeling, don’t they? That good feeling is our original, natural self; that is who we really are before we cover it up with negativity.
Therefore, negative feelings do not allow us to be the all happy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all loving, all abundant person that we naturally are.
At the weekend Release Technique Abundance Course we learn to release the negative feelings; we learn to let go of our lacking feelings, right there on the spot. And, that is exactly what we should be doing when we pump our gas.
Dropping negative feelings, say about the gas prices, we get more positive. Gas prices might not change,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact they may go up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but when we are positive, gas prices can do what they want,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can’t touch us. And, then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when we are positive, we find we can pay whatever they want to charge or we can say, I have decided to take the bus. We decide. We remain positive and therefore happy in spite of what is happening.
Gas prices can help us if we use the gas prices to let go of our negative feelings. When we have the Release Technique skills and are pumping gas, we see that each negative feeling that comes up is an opportunity to remove our blocks to Abundance such as the belief we lack money.
We must notice, if we are upset about the gas prices we are in lack. We are saying we do not have enough money to pay these gas prices and we are strengthening our lacking feelings. For someone with no lacking feelings the price of gas is of no concern. They need the gas. They are going to pay the price because they have the money. They pull up to the pump, put in the credit card and pump the gas. No negative feelings.

One of the big topics of conversation these days is gas prices. What can we do about gas prices? The first thing to do is see that being negative about gas prices does not help us. Being negative about anything does not help us.
Is it any wonder, if we make a list of words such as , sickness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], disease, poverty, stress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all these words are the same negative energy? We know there is very little happening in the lowest energies of negativity. We are full of impossible and see no way out.
When we are holding on to negative feelings, we are in the grasp of negativity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the feelings own us, we have given our power to negativity. If we do not like something, we are in negativity about the thing we do not like and it is certain that our happiness has been given away by the degree of negative feelings we have for that person, thing or situation.
