If you observe the chart after a market cycle or two, you will see that the Working Capital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Net Realized Capital Gains, and Base Income lines move steadily upward regardless of what the market value is doing!
One other important detail: no matter how conservative your selection criteria, a security or two is bound to become a loser. Don't judge this by Wall Street popularity indicators, tealeaves, or analyst opinions. Market value just can't be trusted for a bite-the-bullet decision--- but it can help.
WCM tracking techniques help investors focus on long term growth producers like capital gains, dividends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and interest--- the things that can keep the working capital line (see Part One) moving ever upward. The base income and cumulative realized capital gains lines are the most important WCM growth engines.
The Net Realized Capital Gains line reflects historical trading results, and is most important during the early years of portfolio building. It will directly reflect the security qualification criteria you use, and the profit-taking rules you employ. If you use investment grade value stocks and WCM buy/sell disciplines, you will rarely have a downturn in this important number.
All performance assessment lines need to be treated as learning tools instead of knuckle slappers, and they need to be looked at as inter-dependent pieces of the road map to goal achievement. But there is one more line to add to the chart.
The Base Income Line tracks the total dividends and interest received each year. It will always move upward if you are managing your equity vs. fixed income asset allocation properly. Without adequate base income: 1) working capital will not grow normally during corrections and 2) there won't be enough cash flow to take advantage of new investment opportunities.
You will also notice that the lows in market value begin to occur above earlier highs--- but this may take several cycles to develop. It's comforting to know that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although market value movements are not controllable, the WCM growth engines are. We can actively manage a portfolio to produce increasing base income levels, and we can conservatively select and monitor our equities to assure that all reasonable profits are brought to the bottom line.
The market value line should never be above the working capital line, except occasionally in 100% income portfolios. When it gets close, a greater movement upward in Net Realized Capital Gains should be expected. If it hasn't, you've become greedy--- let no profit go unrealized must become your success mantra!
The Net Invested Capital Line is the pulse of your investment plan and it should beat most rapidly in the early years of portfolio building,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Steady deposits assure that opportunities are not missed and that base income attains the levels needed many years in the future. On my 50th birthday, a friend gave me a cooking class party. During this event, my sister was supposed to be stirring the vanilla glaze for the baked pears. We are all wired in the wireless world.
If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions then heed these 12 steps to cure e-mail addiction! Yes, alcoholics have one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and drug abusers have one. Now people addicted to e-mail (and that’s most of us, yours truly included) have a 12-step program designed to tackle this obsession.
This lack of connection created such an uproar that the New York Times devoted precious space in their ‘Weekend in Review’ section to discuss the nuances about this incident. Namely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], NYT reported that we all have a new syndrome called A - A.D.D. – Acquired Attention Deficit Disorder. Even if we managed not to be labeled A.D.D. during the 90’s give-most-kids-and-adults-a-disorder era, we get this challenge anyway.
What impact does this technology dependence have on you and your business? Are you finding yourself wasting time online? Are you finding that your team is wasting time online? Are you handling new email requests before dealing with the records, piles, and other higher priority issues already on your plate?

7. Turn off automatic send/receive.
8. Establish regular times to review your e-mail. (When I am working on a project I turn off email altogether, such as right now as I write this column.)
9. Involve others in conquering your addiction. (A wonderful client of mine, an executive with American Heart Association, has banned business email from 6pm Fridays to 6am Sundays. His company culture now forces everyone NOT to handle company email on the weekend. Hallelujah!)

That being said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's essential that you be sure the guage of your “hard work and sacrifice” isn’t how tired and down-trodden you feel, but rather how energized and inspired you feel. Because it’s about how much you love your work and what you’re willing to do to make your vision a reality. That’s what it’s really about.
As I've sat with this concept over the past few days, what I've come to realize is that hard work isn’t necessarily diametrically opposed to the concept of living with ease. In fact, I think this may be the cause of so many people’s frustration when it comes to goal achievement. Delving deeper into the writings of these great thinkers I've come to realize that, when they talk about hard work and sacrifice, their meaning isn’t that life should be a slog. Instead, it’s that life should be approached with persistence and commitment — and indeed these two concepts are also written about by all of these individuals. You see, when you interpret "hard work" as “work your fingers to the bone and hate every minute of it” — you neglect to put the concept in the greater context of the work, namely the context of love. Each of these writers also talks about the absolute necessity to LOVE the work you do. And what I know for sure is this: when you LOVE what you do, hard work isn’t hard at all. You’re still committed, you’re still persistent, you’re making sacrifices – and it all feels like fun.
Bottom-line: if you're going after a goal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sure-fire way to achieve it is to be sure you love the goal and the process you engage in to achieve it.

In order to develop laser focus you must apply yourself fully to a specific task until the task is complete and you must do this repeatedly and consistently. In doing so, you are re-training your brain to remain focused on one thing. You will be amazed at the amount of things you are able to get done by simply concentrating on each task, one at a time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], until its completion. As with everything else, it takes effort to hone this skill, especially in the beginning. Practice makes improvement which develops mastery.
Get rid of the distractions, create a to do list, stay on each task until completion (checking them off the list as you go), don’t sweat the small stuff and be present. These four things will help you develop environmental self-control so you are no longer influenced by outside stimuli and you will have an amazing ability to focus and get the job done. Turn off the phone (or silence it) and turn off all notification settings other than those which are vital to your work. I would jump from one task to the next and never seemed to get anything accomplished,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], often feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. The day finally arrived when I realized that I wasn’t getting anywhere and I began a journey to develop better focus. Here's what I discovered and what worked for me:
Too often the small stuff steals our attention away from what we’re working on. I can play with the heading of my website all day long if I don’t have a self-intervention. It looks fine - no one will notice that it’s a fraction of a hair off center – move on. This is also known as procrastination. There are many reasons we procrastinate and I found that the most common reason for procrastination is lack of confidence. The only advice I have for this (and it works quite well) is take the plunge. Yep. Just do it. You'll be surprised at what you're able to do once you dismiss the mind monsters (aka self-defeating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], negative thoughts). The more you do it, the more confidence you gain. The more confidence you gain, the more you do it. You gotta love how that works!
Distractions are everywhere and often we set ourselves up to be distracted. I do most of my work online,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that can be challenging if notification settings are turned on for things sites such as Facebook,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Twitter, Google, email, instant messenger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the like. Add a smartphone or an iPhone to the equation and you have the formula for a productivity meltdown.
